Windows has a long and beautiful (read: painful) blue screen error message history. These error screens, affectionately called the “Blue Screen of Death,” also contain important information about the sudden disappearance of your system. Some Windows crash errors are more mysterious than others, and therefore more difficult to eliminate. The WHEA uncorrectable error is one of them.
In this article, we will explain how to fix an uncorrectable WHEA error and how to prevent it from happening again.
What is a fatal WHEA uncorrectable error?
WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (Windows Stop Code 0x0000124) is a hardware error. There are several common reasons for WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (we will shorten it to WUE), most of which are directly related to the hardware of your system:
- Damaged hardware (Damaged hard drives, GPU, CPU, PSU, damaged RAM, etc.)
- Driver Compatibility Issues
- Problems with heating and voltage (Acceleration and voltage variation)
- Corrupt Windows system files or registry files
Although this is not always the source, voltage problems are a very common cause of this particular Windows error. The WUE message and the stop code 0x0000124 give us an indication of the nature of the error, but viewing the error dump file will provide additional information. Your error dump (.DMP) file is located at C: / Windows / Minidump and will have a timestamp.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer a solution for each problem, but the following fixes should ease your WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.
How to fix WHEA uncorrectable error
Remember the list of common hardware problem that causes WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR? The following section reveals some of these hardware aspects and illustrates several possible fixes.
Step 1: Run CHKDSK
Before making any changes to the hardware, try running Windows Check Disk.
From the command line. CHKDSK is a Windows system tool that checks the file system and with specific settings corrects problems during operation.
Type command prompt in the Start menu search bar, then right-click the best match and select Run as administrator. (Or press Windows Key + X, then select Command Prompt (Administrator) from the menu.) Next, type chkdsk / p and press Enter. The team will scan your system for errors and fix any problems along the way.
Step 2. Check the system hardware
WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR is closely related to the hardware of your system. Before proceeding with system reboot and memory tests, physically double-check system hardware.
Check whether the cooling systems are fully functional, your RAM is securely fixed in its slots, and the processor has not mysteriously failed, and so on.
Step 3: Reset the System Acceleration
If you overclocked your system in search of higher speeds, the chances are that you will come across WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. The easiest way to remove it from the list is to reset the BIOS settings of your system and eliminate the consequences of any overclocking.
You need to enter the system BIOS or UEFI menu. To do this, turn off your system. Then turn on the system again by pressing the BIOS / UEFI access key (common keys include F1, F2, F10, DEL and ESC).
The BIOS and UEFI settings vary by manufacturer, but menu titles are usually similar. You are looking for an overclocking option. In most cases, the overclocking options are in the Advanced, Performance, Frequency, or Voltage menu.
Find the menu and reset the overclocking settings. A reset will reset your system to its original state, but it can also remove WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR in the process.
Step 4: Reset the BIOS / UEFI settings
If you reset the BIOS / UEFI overlock settings, try resetting the entire BIOS. Somewhere in the BIOS menu there is an option to completely reset the BIOS settings or load the default BIOS settings. Find an option and select it.
Step 5: Update BIOS / UEFI Settings
Again, this process varies greatly depending on the manufacturer of the motherboard of your system. Some BIOS / UEFI settings can be automatically downloaded and updated using the desktop utility. Other manufacturers require that you download the BIOS update and update the firmware yourself.
Don’t know what your motherboard is? Download and run CPU-Z. Open the Mainboard and find the manufacturer and model of your motherboard. You can also find your brand and BIOS version on this tab.
Armed with this knowledge, search the Internet for the query “BIOS update [motherboard manufacturer + model].” For example, I would look for a gigabyte b75md3p BIOS update for my system. You have to find instructions, tutorials, and if you’re lucky, even a video or two.
Step 6: Check Your Drivers
Sometimes new drivers have a negative effect on your system. Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly rare, since Windows 10 handles most driver updates.
However, this does not mean that the cunning driver can not upset your system. Fortunately, Windows 10 lists all the driver updates in the Windows Update section, so you can quickly find out where the problem came from.
Click the Windows Key + I to open the settings panel, then select Update Security> View history update. You can find any driver updates here. Now enter Device Manager in the Start menu search bar and select the best match. Scroll down the list and check for an error character. If there is nothing, your driver is most likely not the source of the problem.

Step 7: Check Your Memory With MemTest86
Windows has a built-in memory check called Windows Memory Diagnostic. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a good reputation, and he regularly misses problems that were discovered with another great tool: MemTest86.
MemTest86 is a free standalone memory testing tool for x86 computers.
You load MemTest86 from a USB flash drive (or boot disk) and leave it to check your system’s RAM. Now MemTest86 memory check takes a lot of time; One pass takes several hours depending on the amount of RAM you have installed.
To get the full MemTest86 experience, you must complete at least two passes (these are two full cycles). However, according to most reports, MemTest86 can reveal a serious RAM problem after a short amount of time.
Go to the download page of MemTest86 and download the Image to create a bootable CD (in ISO format). Then you need to write MemTest86 ISO to a USB-drive. Check out this list of ten free tools to make a bootable USB flash drive.
Record MemTest86 using the tool of your choice, then turn off the system. Reboot the system by pressing the button for the boot selection menu.
(usually F10, F11, DEL, or ESC), then select the MemTest86 USB boot drive. The memory test will start automatically.
If it returns RAM errors, search the Internet for the error code and enter it to find out how to proceed.
Step 8: Reset Windows 10 (as a last resort)
If nothing works, you can use the Windows 10 reset function to upgrade your system.
Windows 10 Reset replaces your system files
with a completely new set of files and theoretically clear all the problems associated with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, while keeping most of your important files intact.
Head to Settings> Update and Security> Recovery, then under Reset this PC Select Start.
Your system will reboot as soon as you press the button, so be sure to back up any important files in advance. Your system will reboot, then you can choose Store my files or Delete all.
WHEA Fixed a fatal error!
Bluescreen errors are disappointing. Especially if you really do not understand how much of the equipment causes the problem. The above fixes will fix your WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, but remember that playing with your equipment can lead to its return.
